The Kaunertal Glacier will open what they claim is the steepest marked ski run in Austria this weekend.
The ‘Black Ibex piste’ pitches at an average 41.3 degrees and has a gradient of 87.85% according to the resort’s marketing department, which also enthuses.
The new black slope is blacker than black and its steepness trumps even the most legendary downhill run in the world – the Streif!
The “Black Ibex” is also known as the slope 1b Weisssee and is located next to the top station of new Falginjochbahn 3,113 m.
The latest measurements
It took a while before the slope could be opened, because it requires masses of snow. The circumstances this week were finally such that the slope could be safely opened. The Black Ibex is 3 kilometres long with an altitude drop of 363 metres. The steepest part is around 500 metres long. According to the Kaunertal Glacier lift company, the Black Ibex beats out the Streif (Hahnenkamm, Kitzbuhel) for top place in Austria's steepest-piste competition. The steepest part of the Streif has a gradient of 85% to the Black Ibex's 87.5%.
